The book An Introduction to  Statistics and Probability Education Based on the Statistical Literacy Approach authored by Dr. Ehsan Bahrami Samani, Professor at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University, has been published. This work was released for the first time in 2025 (1404), in a 200-page octavo volume by Shahid Beheshti University Press and is available for 1,800,000 IRR.

In today’s data-driven world, statistical literacy is an essential competency for every citizen. Modern life requires individuals to understand and interpret the vast amounts of data encountered daily and to make sound and valid inferences amid an overwhelming flow of information. In other words, statistical literacy has become indispensable.

Tracing the development of statistics and probability reveals that these fields emerged not only to address real-world problems but also as key components of scientific literacy in the 21st century. Statistics plays a crucial role across numerous disciplines—engineering, medicine, the biological sciences, economics, psychology, and the social sciences. Accordingly, integrating statistics and probability into school and university curricula, and teaching them effectively, cultivates important skills such as decision-making, judgment, and data-based prediction. At the same time, statistics education has become an active research domain focused on how best to teach statistical concepts to students at various levels.

The primary aim of this book is to address significant challenges in teaching statistics and probability in secondary education (Grades 10–12) as well as in university-level service courses for non-statistics majors. Another objective is to provide high-quality instructional materials informed by comparative studies of educational standards used in leading countries in the field. The wide range of examples presented throughout the book also makes it a valuable resource for teachers and university instructors seeking to deepen their understanding of statistics and probability.

The book consists of eight chapters:

Chapter 1 reviews fundamental concepts in teaching statistics and probability, introduces statistical and graphical literacy, and outlines key educational standards.

Chapter 2 discusses data storytelling, presents illustrative examples, and introduces major elements of the approach, concluding with an overview of different types of datasets.

Chapter 3 explains the concept of variables, their types, and common misconceptions.

Chapter 4 develops statistical literacy through measures of central tendency using a step-by-step instructional approach.

Chapter 5 focuses on measures of dispersion and the concept of variability.

Chapter 6 deals with understanding data distributions using skewness and kurtosis.

Chapter 7 examines probability, chance, randomness, and related misconceptions.

Chapter 8 introduces inferential statistics, including data collection, parameters and statistics, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, and regression.

As no Persian-language textbook—original or translated—has previously existed for the course Teaching Statistics and Probability at the undergraduate level, this book represents the first comprehensive resource for teachers, student-teachers, university instructors, and students of statistics in Iran.

Students and interested readers may purchase the book from the Sales Office of the Center for the Publication of Scientific Works at Shahid Beheshti University, located on the ground floor of the Information Technology (IT) Building. Online orders are also available through the Center’s website. The electronic version of the book can be purchased from Fidibo and Taghche.
